Description
You will find different Peel assets around the Deurnsche Peel, the Mariapeel and De Groote Peel. These are all important and beautiful places in the Peel area that are worth a visit. Each place has its own story and all these stories together introduce you to the history of Peel. Peat, raised bogs and the war are the topics that run through this history.
Peel assets with a story
The starting point of this route is in Meijel. From here you cycle past the De Groote Peel National Park and then set course for Griendtsveen. Along the way you will pass the Peel assets in the peel villages of Helenaveen, Griendtsveen and Meijel. The Peel assets are 'work in progress': these locations will be provided with information and furnishings in the near future. At the Peeltroef on the Raadhuisplein in Meijel you will find two wheelbarrows. Here you will learn more about the history of Meijel in combination with peat and the war. All other Peel assets are also indicated with peat barrows and raised bog columns.
Admire works of art
Other beautiful sights along the route are the artwork De Turfsteker and the bronze statue Het Reizend Gezag. The Turfsteker is a reference to all the men who for centuries went from Meijel into the Peel to cut peat.
The Peel
De Peel is a raised bog area where peat used to be cut. The area covers more than 1,400 hectares and is located on the border of Limburg and North Brabant, in the Meijel-Asten-Nederweert triangle. De Peel, now a National Park, is one of the few remnants of a huge raised bog area. Today it is a nature reserve of international class, especially renowned for its birdlife.
