De Turfsteker

The artwork De Turfsteker was designed in 1991 by Truus Coumans. The stocky peat cutter is working with his peat shovel to stick the very heavy peat out of the peat bank. The face is clearly worked out, the rest is rough, almost "muddy", left. From Meijel people went into the Peel for centuries to cut peat. Every year, a peeling field was leased and peat was put in it, which was used in the stove and for processing manure in the stable.
