Hiking in Helmond, North Brabant, The Netherlands
Hiking route 337916
Provided by: VVV Helmond
History and industry go hand and hand in this route along the Helmond canal. The canal, the Zuid Willemsvaart, flows right through Helmond and divides the center into east and west.
Industry in Helmond
The starting point of the route is at the Cacaofabriek in the center of Helmond. From here you can walk past striking commercial buildings, manufacturers' villas and various structures and works of art built on both sides of the canal in the 19th and 20th centuries. A surprising amount of Helmond history has been preserved and you can see that during this tour. You are constantly torn between the past and the present. This gives you a good idea of the fascinating industry in Helmond.
Activity along the canal
At the cocoa factory you will see the first historical sight: a crane track from 1928, which has not been used for years. On the other side you will also see industrial activity along the canal. The dyeing machines of textile factories Vlisco and Raymakers, for example, are running at full speed and Nederschroef, producer of fasteners, is also still in operation on the canal. You also walk past a medieval castle with a beautiful sculpture park and the bustling Havenplein with many cozy terraces to eat or drink something.
Helmond's history explained
Helmond is bursting with sights that teach you more about the city's history. Visit the Edah Museum where you can learn everything about food production and distribution. For example, colonial goods used to be brought in via the canal from Amsterdam and Rotterdam. You can no longer imagine that at a time when all foodstuffs are freely available in the supermarket. You can visit the Industrial Atrium to learn more about Helmond's industrial heritage or, for example, the textile or metal industry.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
