Description
You will find all kinds of locks, pumping stations and flood defenses around the Zwarte Water river. This route takes you along all these old and new waterworks. It is certainly worthwhile to get off your bike in these special places and to feast your eyes. You will also cycle past various sights around the towns of Genemuiden, Hasselt and Zwartsluis.
Places of interest in Hasselt and Zwartsluis
The starting point of this route is on the outskirts of Hasselt. Here you can still find traces of the city's glorious Hanseatic past everywhere. From Hasselt you will soon cycle past the first sight: windmill de Zwaluw. This corn mill was built in 1748 and is equipped with an old Dutch wick system with sails. In the town of Zwartsluis you can visit Sluuspoort & Museum Schoonewelle. Here you can learn more about nature in the Northwest Overijssel area.
The tapestry city of the Netherlands
A little further on in Genemuiden you can make a stop at the Carpet Museum. This city is the tapestry city of the Netherlands and it is therefore not surprising that this museum can be found here.
