Description
You will find all kinds of locks, pumping stations and flood defenses around the Zwarte Water river. This route takes you past all these old and new waterworks. It is certainly worthwhile to get off your bike in these special places and feast your eyes. You will also cycle past various sights around the towns of Genemuiden, Hasselt and Zwartsluis.
Sights in Hasselt and Zwartsluis
The starting point of this route is on the edge of Hasselt. Here you will still find traces of the city's glorious Hanseatic past everywhere. From Hasselt you quickly cycle past the first sight: the Zwaluw mill. This flour mill was built in 1748 and is equipped with an Old Dutch blade system with sails. In the town of Zwartsluis you can visit Sluuspoort & Museum Schoonewelle. Here you can learn more about nature in the Northwest Overijssel area.
The carpet city of the Netherlands
A little further on in Genemuiden you can stop at the Carpet Museum. This city is the carpet city of the Netherlands and it is therefore not surprising that this museum can be found here. The old weaving machines and handlooms take you back in time. Do you have any questions about the area? Then go to a Tourist Info point in Genemuide, Hasselt or Zwartsluis.
