Tapijtmuseum

In this museum you will learn everything about carpet making. The production of floor coverings started in Genemuiden early in the sixteenth century with the weaving of rush mats as domestic industry. Coconut and sisal mats were made from 1920. First, these mats were made manually and from 1926 they were also made in factories on weaving machines. The production of woven wool carpets followed later. Nowadays, 750 kilometers of synthetic carpet and artificial grass are made every week in Genemuiden. This is done with tufting machines. This entire history is extensively described and depicted in the museum. For example, take a look at the different types of floor covering that has been made in Genemuiden over the centuries and the tools that were and are needed for this. Furthermore, demonstrations are given of how mats used to be woven by hand. You can also give it a try yourself and feel how tiring it is to carry out these activities by hand.
