Description

Emlichheim is known in old Dutch documents around 1700 and in the Twente dialect as Emmelkamp. Emlichheim has existed since the time of Charlemagne. Emlichheim is already mentioned in 1312. The church was built around 1150 with Bentheim sandstone. Unfortunately, there is not much left of old Emlichheim.
The Overijselse Vecht (in Lower Saxony: Vechte) has its sources in the Münsterland and flows into the Zwarte Water near Zwolle. One of the sources is the moat of Darfeld Castle. Another source tells the story that around 400 AD. Prince Vechtan drowned while crossing the river. His name lives on in the name of the river. A lot of Bentheimer Sandstone (an important building material) was transported via the Vecht. Because the river had so many bends, digging of the Nieuwe Vecht started in 1600 and the Vecht was canalized in the 20th century. A skipper took 2 days to travel Amsterdam-Zwolle and then 6 days to reach Nordhorn.

Coevorden
Coevorden was founded around 1150 at a ford in a river. A castle was soon built in Coevorden to defend one of the few entrances to Drenthe from the south. The castle is one of the two castles in Drenthe that still exist.
In addition to the Castle, well-known sights are parts of the inner and outer city canals with restored bastions, the Arsenal (1643) with museum, the Reformed Cross Church (1645), the 322 meter high water tower and the statues of the 3 Podagrists in front of the Castle and the Goose Keeper on the Market.

Valleys
The esdorp Dalen originated in the Middle Ages along the old road from Coevorden to Groningen. The church tower and the church bell date from the 15th and 15th century respectively. 17th century. The church itself was built on old foundations in 1824. You will also find a number of old farms and two mills. The route passes the mill'De Bente\\\' from 1814.

Schans De Katshaar

The redoubt was probably built around 1680. At first there was only a square redoubt with sides of 50 meters each (redoubt). Because most traffic passed through the fortified town of Coevorden, the fortification had little military significance. At the end of the 18th century, the fortification was expanded with a retrenchment consisting of earthen walls and a moat in the shape of two sawtooths to counter the military threat from the east of the Prussian armies.

Schoonebeek

Schoonebeek was first mentioned in 1250. The agricultural character of the hamlets of Oosterse Bos, Middendorp andWestern Bos has remained. The oldest farms in the region can be seen here. In Schoonebeek, the most striking 17th century farm is the museum'Zwaantje Hans Stokmanshof\\\'.
Schoonebeek has become best known for its oil. In 1943, oil was discovered in the Schoonebeekerveld. This oil field is the largest onland oil field in NW Europe. Between 1948 and 1996, the Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM) extracted a quarter of the available oil using the Yes Marbles. In 1996, NAM stopped mining. The oil was too tough and too viscous for the techniques at the time.
With new techniques, NAM started in 2010 using 15-meter high high-efficiency pumps to again extract oil with a combination of horizontal wells (Yes marbles use vertical wells) and low-pressure steam injection. This requires 73 new wells.
