In the Taunus, on the road from Königstein to Schmitten (L3025) on the northern slope of the Großer Feldberg, lies the Rote Kreuz, which is close to the source of the Weil. The Weiltalweg starts at the Rote Kreuz and leads over a length of 47.5 km to Weilburg, where the Weil flows into the Lahn. The route starts at the Rote Kreuz at an altitude of 688 m and ends at the Lahn at an altitude of 128 m.
At the beginning, the route leads along the Lahn to the mouth of the Weil, then continues into the Weiltal and leads close to the Weil on the almost flat, former railway line to Weilmünster. After that, the route changes more often between the valley and the slopes of the Weiltal, so that the route has a few, usually only short, climbs and descents. The longest climbs/descents are on the Niebgesbach sections.
