Description

Nowhere is a country so skillfully drained as in the Netherlands. The polder landscape is therefore considered typically Dutch; there are approximately 4,000 of them in the Netherlands. The water level is regulated by polder mills, pumping stations, or drainage sluices. Where the water level needs to be higher, a fixed, higher water level can be achieved using weirs. The cycling tour begins in the Anna Paulownapolder, in the village of the same name. Within a kilometer, you'll find the Leonide windmill. The windmill looks like a traditional sawmill, but it never had a grinding function. The smock mill was built in 2002 as a residential building. Apart from the upper wheel, there are no drive components in the mill. Parts of the Leonide are second-hand; the octagon, for example, comes from the former polder mill De Zeemeeuw in Uithuizen. Then you cycle to a small meadow mill in Callantsoog. De Zwaan was installed in 1993 and serves as a watering station for the surrounding nature reserve. The hollow post mill, with its distinctive appearance and two sails, is a municipal monument. The upper part of the black polder mill features a coat of arms depicting the swan, from which the mill takes its name. You'll cross the bulb fields on your way to the next attraction. Each bulb field is more colorful and fragrant than the next. All shades of red, purple, pink, white, yellow, and orange create a magnificent picture here from spring to autumn. Crocuses, tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths can be found in the early months of the warm season, while in late summer, gladioli, dahlias, carnations, and asters provide a second sea of color. On the dike, you'll encounter the Julianadorp Lighthouse: the Groote Kaap. Completed in 1966, the tower is 16.8 meters tall. In 1985, the current tower replaced it. Its fiery red color contrasts vividly with the blue sky. The lighthouse is painted white. The final attraction of the cycling tour is the Lange Jaap lighthouse in Den Helder. It's the tallest lighthouse in the Netherlands (63.45m) and even the tallest cast-iron tower in Europe. Construction of the red tower began in 1877, and the light was switched on on April 1, 1878. Anyone looking out to sea can see the tower shining from a distance of 54 kilometers.
