Cycling around Leopoldsburg

With this route you will get to know Leopoldsburg, a town in the north of Belgian Limburg. The place owes its name to King Leopold I. In 1835 he set up a barracks here with extensive training grounds as a defense against the Netherlands. You can still see that military history in various places. For example, you cycle past Leopoldsburg Station from 1878: the station is closed, the building is a monument. You will experience that typical Limburg geniality everywhere in the town. And the Burgundian slant: there is always a terrace where a delicious fresh Limburg pie is served. Humor is also not unknown to the inhabitants. Since 2007 you will find a real Walk of Fame in Leopoldsburg, a joke to Hollywood. Because relatively many BV\\\'ers - or Famous Flemings - grew up in Leopoldsburg, they got their own star here. But Leopoldsburg is also a green municipality. West of the town you cycle through the Gerheserbossen, a forest whose history goes back 10,000 years. You mainly see sandy soils and dunes covered with pine forests. If you look closely, you will also discover old remnants of heathland and fen.
