Cycling around Leopoldsburg

This route introduces you to Leopoldsburg, a town in the north of Belgian Limburg. The town owes its name to King Leopold I. In 1835, he established a barracks here with extensive training grounds as a defense against the Netherlands. This military history is still evident in several places. For example, you'll cycle past Leopoldsburg Station, dating from 1878: the station is now closed, but the building is a listed building. Throughout the town, you'll experience that typical Limburg conviviality. And the Burgundian spirit: you can always find a terrace serving delicious, fresh Limburg pie. The residents are also no strangers to humor. Since 2007, Leopoldsburg has boasted a proper Walk of Fame, a nod to Hollywood. Because a relatively large number of celebrities (known as "BV\\'ers" or "Flemish Celebrities") grew up in Leopoldsburg, they were given their own stars in the sidewalk. But Leopoldsburg is also a green municipality. West of the town, you'll cycle through the Gerheserbossen, a forest with a history dating back 10,000 years. You'll see primarily sandy soils and dunes covered in pine forests. If you look closely, you'll also discover ancient remnants of heathland and fens.
