The history of Halsteren goes back centuries and owes its right to exist at the time to the fact that it was a peat extraction village. The oldest mention dates from 1272, when the village was still called Halstert, but names such as Haltre and Halstre have also been found in writing. In the thirteenth century a parish was founded and there must have been a small harbour. The first church of the village was located between Halsteren and Tholen, but was swallowed up by the water during the All Saints' Flood in 1570. One of the historical buildings that can still be seen in Halsteren is the old Town Hall in the centre, which was built in 1633.
