Hiking route: 1283299
Provided by: Groots Genieten
The river De Niers meanders here through a lovely landscape of grasslands, small watercourses and swamp forests with willows and poplars. You will find a varied flora and fauna here. On the edge of Gennep you can see the Sint-Martinustoren from 1869. The church itself was destroyed at the end of WWII, now you can visit the Visitors Centre St. Martinustoren. Along the way you will also pass various audio locations with liberation stories. At the place where the Niers flows into the Maas, the Genneperhuis once stood. The history of this fortress is said to go all the way back to a Roman fortification. After many battles, the fortress was destroyed by the French in 1710. A watchtower now stands on the foundations.
