City walk Edam: to the Cheese Market

Café de Gevangenpoort/Restaurant La Galera is a perfect starting point for a beautiful city walk through old Edam. The historic city center of Edam is located within a former fortress. From the former city walls you have a beautiful view of the beautiful harbor. Because of the many old buildings, Edam enjoys a protected cityscape. Walk leisurely along the canals and beautiful facades and soak up that unique historical atmosphere. You pass the Zuidpolder, a polder mill from 1635. The fifteenth-century Grote Kerk is the largest hall church in the Netherlands. You will also pass the Cheese Market, where cheese is still traded every Wednesday morning in the summer. Under the supervision of the market master, the Noordwester Edammer is delivered by boat or horse and cart. The old Play Tower now houses a museum.
