The Grote or St. Nicolaaskerk dominates on the northwestern outskirts of Edam. This hall church in late Gothic style was started in the first half of the 15th century. The church building, plus tower and portals, was completed around 1518. In 1601, a major fire destroyed the hoods and much of the interior. Because of its wealth and large donations, the church building was quickly restored. The 'new' 32 stained glass glasses come from the period 1602 -1627, a heyday of stained glass and are executed in renaissance style. From about 1590 to 1830 there are burials in the church. Napoleon forbade it. Afterwards, burials took place in the monumental cemetery adjacent to the church.
