Description

Cycling below sea level? Many people don't want to think about it, afraid they will be flooded. Not a completely unfounded fear, because during the Middle Ages the land below sea level was regularly flooded. For example, the many names ending in -braak refer directly to places where the dikes used to break. Peat rivers grew here into flood channels and inland seas. Something you can hardly see now, because many of those ponds were drained. Consider, for example, the Beemsterpolder, which you partly cycle along.

Impressive buildings in Edam
In 1532, during the reign of Emperor Charles V, a system of dikes and water management was devised to increase the safety of the inhabitants. Broadly speaking, that system is still in operation, as you can see along the way. The ever-threatening water in Edam has never been an obstacle to the construction of impressive buildings. In this old trading city, wealthy merchants made it easy at the time. Many of those old merchant houses still adorn the old center, untouched by time.

The water as an ally
Sometimes grateful use was made of all that water. Such as the Defense Line of Amsterdam: a unique line of defense around Amsterdam where water was used to protect the city. During this route you will pass three of the more than forty forts: Fort bij Edam, Fort Benoorden Purmerend and Fort Kwadijk. At the De Breek Visitor Center in Oosthuizen you will find the lowest point in North Holland: more than six meters below sea level. Here you can drink a coffee and stretch your legs. With dry feet, because the Zuiderzee was tamed with the arrival of the Afsluitdijk.
