Het gemaal van de polder Zeevang
The Zeevang polder is a large polder of 3219 hectares that used to be drained by five auger mills. The first steam pumping station was founded near Edam in 1872 and was demolished in 1920. In 1879, a second, larger steam pumping station was built on the site of a mortar mill near Kwadijk, designed by the engineering firm WC & K. de Wit from Amsterdam. Given the size of the polder, a double installation with two augers was chosen. Although the drawbacks of the auger, compared to centrifugal pumps, were known, a auger was often preferred for the drainage of large polders. Because the large polders were (and are) less sensitive to rapid water level fluctuations as a result of precipitation, long uninterrupted drainage was required.
