Your route starts at Landgoed Vriezenhuis. This route takes you through and along beautiful peat areas that the Achterhoek is rich in. In the past, the western side of the Achterhoek must have been an impenetrable area of swamp forest and peat. When the ice sheet retreated after the last Ice Age, moist basins were left behind, in which peat moss grew. Because the bottom of the peat moss dies, an accumulation of this material occurs, which eventually leads to the creation of raised bog. The Korenburgerveen and Vragenderveen are now protected nature reserves. Be sure to stop in Groenlo, a fortified town that was fiercely fought over in 1627. Prince Frederik Hendrik recaptured Groenlo from the Spanish in this year. The canals, cannons and earthen walls are still clearly visible. A nice place to soak up the atmosphere! Stop at Skik & Zo Eten & Drinken for a delicious break.
