Your route starts at Vriezenhuis Estate. This route takes you through and past beautiful peat areas in the Achterhoek. In the past, the west side of the Achterhoek must have been an impenetrable area of swamp forest and peat. With the retreat of the land ice after the last Ice Age, moist basins were left behind in which peat moss grew. Because the underside of the peat moss dies, an accumulation of this material occurs, which ultimately causes raised peat to form. The Korenburger and the Tussenderveen are now protected nature reserves. Be sure to get off in Groenlo, a fortified town that was fiercely fought over in 1627. Prince Frederik Hendrik recaptured Groenlo from the Spaniards in this year. The canals, cannons and earthen walls are still clearly visible. A nice place to soak up the atmosphere!
