Description

In the past, the Achterhoek must have been an impenetrable area. This through the wooded hills and the streams that flowed to the lower swamp forest and peat on the west side of the Achterhoek. This route leads you through and along beautiful peat areas that the Achterhoek is rich in. Fortified town of Groenlo Groenlo is a fortified town that was fiercely fought over in 1627. Prince Frederik Hendrik recaptured Groenlo from the Spaniards in this year. The canals, cannons and earthen walls are still clearly visible. Nature Park De Leemputten About 20 million years ago there was a sea here; we would now be standing on the seabed! Clay and loam was deposited here. The brick factory was opened in Groenlo in 1892, the required clay and loam was extracted from this location. From here it was transported by train to Groenlo, where it was used for the manufacture of roof tiles and bricks. There was active digging until 1975, after which the factory closed and the Leemputten nature park was created. Korenburger- en hetvragenderveen During the Ice Age, this part of the country was covered with a large ice tongue. With the retreat of the ice, a bowl was formed, in which water remained. Peat moss developed in this. Because the underside of the peat moss dies, an accumulation of this material occurs, which ultimately causes the formation of raised bog. This peat area has been a protected nature reserve since the second half of the 20th century. Guided tours are given by appointment. You can register for this at VVV Lichtenvoorde, telephone number 0544 - 375775. Bredevoort City of books Bredevoort is an ancient fortified town with city rights. The rich history of Bredevoort is clearly reflected in the historic townscape with many small streets, old buildings and squares. Bredevoort is best known as a city of books. Many second-hand bookshops and antiquarian bookshops have settled in the monumental buildings. Prince of Orange Around 1644/45, the Prince of Orange, as lord of Bredevoort, granted permission for the construction of a post mill on Welgemoed, a bastion that formed part of the fortifications of Bredevoort. The current mill was built on the same place in 1870, after the standard mill burned down in 1869. The construction of this mill took longer than usual, because the German masons had to serve as soldiers in the Franco-Prussian war. The mill was restored for the first time in 1968 and again in 1991 and 1992 for the technical part. After a break in the riveted inner rod, the current Vaags rods were installed. In this second restoration, a second bell door has also been installed in the same place as before. When we are almost at the end of this cycle route, we pass the mill de Vier Winden. Around 1860, a ground sailer was built on the current location of the mill and was replaced by the current tower mill in 1958 on behalf of the Gunnewick miller family. The mill was built by the well-known mill maker JD Medendorp from Zuidlaren. Parts of some demolished mills were used for this. It is striking that this mill, in contrast to most octagonal tower mills, has a very strong square substructure. The mill is fully equipped for a professional grinding company and still works as such. In all likelihood, De Vier Winden is the last windmill in the Netherlands built for economic reasons.
