Hiking in Eelde and Paterswolde

This walking route of more than 11 kilometers starts at Cafe Theater G & A Boelens in the pleasant center of Eelde. The route takes you along beautiful estates in Groningen.

Beautiful estate
Along the way you will pass Landgoed Vennebroek, a large estate north of Paterswolde. You will see grasslands and beech and oak avenues here. There are about 200 species of mushrooms here, as well as a sweet chestnut of about 350 years old, with a circumference of 4.7 meters. Various parts of the estate have been recognized as a national monument, including the house itself. The house is privately owned.

De Braak country estate
A little further on you walk past Buitenplaats De Braak. In the 19th century, De Braak is an estate complete with a country house and beautiful park. The well-known garden architect Lucas Pieter Roodbaard made the garden design. From 1890 the situation changes when Jan Evert Scholten buys De Braak. He has the mansion demolished and builds all kinds of attractions in the park. A maze, chain bridge and berceau (covered walkway) were the attractions for paying visitors. A kiosk was also built around 1919. The kiosk was removed in 1964, but has been back on the estate since 2006.

Take a short break
After the walking tour you will arrive back at Cafe Theater G & A Boelens. A cozy family business with a nice, heated terrace. You can go here for a cup of coffee, lunch in the afternoon and in the evenings for a drink or one of the seasonal beers.
