Country estates and estates
Buitenplaats De Braak
Lieutenant ter Voet van Schelfhorst, married to the German Fraulein Von Braake, owned the estate around 1700. The estate may belong to her. Which is also possible that it is derived from "pants" (low marshy land). After Lucas Nijsingh, the mayor of Groningen, Mr. Lucas Trip De Braak, owner of the estate by inheritance. He made it his summer residence. He owned it until the early 1800s. De Braak was transferred to the Hesseling family. The current park was created in 1825. A country house has stood on the estate between the ponds. From the turret of the manor one had an unobstructed view of the lawn and the pond. When the house became uninhabited, it was demolished in 1890. On the same site a dome was built which was used as a summer residence, now disappeared. Parts of the mansion were used during a renovation of a farm. That is now the manager's white service residence. In 1920 De Braak was bought by Natuurmonumenten. The estate is freely accessible
