Description
This NS walk takes you over the Utrechtse Heuvelrug between the train stations of Driebergen-Zeist and Maarn. Many wealthy people used to choose the Utrechtse Heuvelrug as the location of their country residence. You can see that in the beautiful places you pass during this trip. Time to hit the road!
From estate to estate
Take the train to Driebergen-Zeist and walk straight from the station into the nature of De Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park . You can enjoy the forests and heaths for which this national park is known, but also estates. At the start of the route you walk across beautiful estates such as Landgoed Groot Heidestein, the Willinkshof and Bornia. After about 8 kilometers of walking you will arrive in the village of Austerlitz. This town was created in 1804 when a general of Napoleon gathered his troops here. The place was called the Camp of Utrecht at the time.
On to Maarn
From Austerlitz you continue through the Austerlitz forestry and through the area called the Cow Hills. The latter is a remnant of an originally much larger shifting sand area with heaths where sheep used to graze. You end your walk at the train station in Maarn. Here you can immediately take the train home, but you can of course also take a look at Maarn.
The pyramid of Austerlitz
Want to spot an extra attraction? Then deviate from the route between Austerlitz and Maarn on the way to take a look at the famous Pyramid of Austerlitz. This structure was built here by the French soldiers in memory of Napoleon's victories.
