Walking tour through medieval Westervoort

Today you set off to discover the beautiful village of Westervoort: probably the oldest village in the Liemers.

Early Middle Ages
You start today a stone's throw from the station, that's easy! Westervoort dates back to the early Middle Ages, the village was already mentioned on a parchment from 726. Due to the surrounding rivers, Westervoort was long dependent on ferry services. A railway bridge was not built until the middle of the nineteenth century, the bridge for other traffic dates from 1901.

St Werenfried
On the Klapstraat you will pass farm Emmerik from the sixteenth or seventeenth century, which originated from a manor house. Just before returning you walk past the Dutch Reformed Church of St. Werenfried, a Lower Rhine Gothic pseudo-basilica whose nave and choir date from the fifteenth century. The tower is even older. It is worth walking in, you will see an oak pulpit and crown from the seventeenth century. The organ was built in 1708.
