This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages. Business card
After visiting Kampen, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp will leave by barge for Zwolle on Saturday, July 12. They visit Governor Bentinck unannounced. He receives them politely, but at the same time so coolly that the travelers quickly turn away. They leave their cards behind, but the governor is not heard from again.
Governess
On Sunday they attend a service in the Grote Kerk in Zwolle. However, Van Lennep has other priorities, because during mass he only pays attention to a beautiful woman sitting among the churchgoers. He thinks he recognizes her, but from what? When Van Lennep sees her again later on a city square, he remembers: it is his former governess. At dinner they sit next to each other and Van Lennep talks to her about"(...) what people tell beautiful women\\\". Unfortunately, the reader will not receive any further explanation. In the sixth TV episode, Geert Mak explains why this flirt could never become anything. By the way, the normally stiff and introverted Van Hogendorp is also having a bad time that evening. According to Van Lennep, this is very exceptional.
Hattem
The travelers take a trip to the other side of the IJssel. They walk through Hattem, characterized by Van Lennep as "a miserable city". Then they walk up a hill. Presumably the more than 36 meter high Trijselenberg, the northernmost tip of the Oost-Veluwe moraine. Instead of the current forest, heather must have grown there, because Van Lennep has a view as far as Nijkerk. They walk back to Zwolle via Huis Molecaten.
There are two ferries along this route:'t Kleine Veer and het Haersterveer.
