This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour that was inspired by the tour that Van Lennep made in 1823 with his fellow student Van Hogendorp through the Netherlands. Click here for an overview of all stages. Business card
After having visited Kampen, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp leave for Zwolle on Saturday 12 July by barge. They visit Governor Bentinck unannounced. He receives them politely, but at the same time so coolly that the travellers quickly leave. They leave their tickets behind, but the governor does not contact them again.
Governess
On Sunday they attend a service in the Grote Kerk in Zwolle. Van Lennep has other priorities, because during the service he only pays attention to a beautiful woman who is sitting among the churchgoers. He thinks he recognizes her, but from where? When Van Lennep sees her again later on a city square, he remembers: it is his former governess. At dinner they sit next to each other and Van Lennep talks to her about"(...) what people tell beautiful women\\\". Unfortunately, the reader does not get any more explanation. In the sixth TV episode, Geert Mak explains why this flirtation could never amount to anything. Incidentally, the normally so stiff and introverted Van Hogendorp also has a fling that evening. According to Van Lennep, that is very exceptional.
Hattem
The travellers take a trip to the other side of the IJssel. They walk through Hattem, described by Van Lennep as "a miserable city". Then they walk up a hill. Presumably the 36-metre-high Trijselenberg, the northernmost point of the East Veluwe moraine. Instead of the current forest, there must have been heathland there, because Van Lennep has a view all the way to Nijkerk. Via Huis Molecaten they walk back to Zwolle.
There are two ferries along this route: 't Kleine Veer and the Haersterveer.
