Walking around Fort Nieuwersluis

From Fort Nieuwersluis you can take a nice detour. You walk along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, past some country estates and through the picturesque village of Nieuwersluis.

Dutch Waterline
A fortification was built at the location of Fort Nieuwersluis as early as 1629. This fortification was developed into a full-fledged fort in the period 1849 - 1880 as part of the New Dutch Waterline. From Fort Nieuwersluis, the locks in the Nieuwe Wetering and the Vecht, as well as the roads along the river and the Utrecht-Amsterdam railway line, could be targeted. From the fort you walk to the leafy banks of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, which is a lovely walk.

Rupelmonde
You walk a bit on the Over-Holland estate. Here you see mature forest and (ash) coppice. There are several country estates along the road, such as Rupelmonde from 1768: the most photographed house in the Vecht region. During the First World War, this country house was almost blown up to create a clear field of fire for Fort Nieuwersluis. A little further on you pass through the picturesque village of Nieuwersluis, where you have a beautiful view of the Vecht. Time for a coffee at Fort Nieuwersluis.
