Description

The hidden village is located in the woods of Vierhouten in the south of the municipality of Nunspeet. It was inhabited by people in hiding during the Second World War between February 1943 and October 1944. On average, 80 to 100 Jews could be found in the village per day. The"village\\\" consisted of a number of primitive huts, half buried in the ground. There are now 3 reconstructed huts. At the end of October 1944, the village was discovered by 2 SS men who were hunting. Eight of the 86 were captured and shot at a later date, 6 people were shot at the Tongerenseweg and 2 at the bottom of the hill near the Paasheuvel camp house. The rest managed to escape. In memory of the executed people in hiding, a memorial stone was placed on the Tongerseweg in 1995. This indicates approximately the place where the drama took place. In Vierhouten there is an exhibition about the hidden village. This is located in the tourist office building at nunspeterweg 1
