Historic sites
Start your tour with a tour of the historic village of Niehove. This entire village has a protected village view, so there is plenty to see. Here you can take a look at the Dutch Reformed Church, among other things. Would you like to take a look at the church? Then pick up the key to this abandoned church at the Key Address M. Terpstra. From Niehove you set course for Niezijl. Just like Niehove, this is a village built on a wierde, an artificial hill. This used to be done a lot in Groningen to protect the inhabitants of the villages against high water. Then you continue via Kommerzijl to the point where you also started your journey in Niehove.

From island to mainland
The area you walk through used to be an island with undeveloped peat bogs around it. It was not until 1500 that the Humsterland was connected to the mainland by dikes. Later, the land around the Humsterland was reclaimed and so it became part of the mainland.
