Anyone who thinks that the longest and most water-rich river in the Eifel originates from a small, bubbling spring in the forest is mistaken. These are several source streams that meet at the Losheimergraben, form a river and from then on, under the collective name of 'Kyll', make their way towards the Moselle. Over approx. 123 kilometres, it has two constant companions: the Kyll cycle path and the rails of the Cologne-Trier train connection with 22 stations along the route. An advantage that you can benefit from after 72 kilometers of cycling, because you can comfortably cover the steep part between Kyllburg and Bitburg-Erdorf by train. Furthermore, the cycle path is mainly flat to slightly hilly; all in all slightly downhill.
Recreational cyclists start the cycle tour in Kronenburg, at Dahlem station or in the High Fens in Belgium. The Kyll cycle path is connected to the Vennbahn cycle path via the former railway line between Jünkerath on the German side and Weywertz on the Belgian side. You don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes to discover the Kasselburcht in Pelm - the cycle path runs directly below the majestically looming castle. However, to get to the top of the extensive castle complex with eagle and wolf park, exercise and fitness are essential for the approx. 2 km long, very steep climb. Families in particular should plan a half day especially for this visit. The drinking bottle can be refilled at the Helenenbron in the Spa Park Gerolstein. The tour continues over narrow bridges, past Bertrada Castle in Mürlenbach, where Charlemagne is said to have been born, past a former convent of the Cistercian nuns in St. Thomas and even through an illuminated tunnel shortly after Kyllburg. Those who succeed in the aforementioned climb (more than 10 percent) will be rewarded with a magnificent panorama. After the lightning-fast descent, you soon pass the bridge over the Kyll valley, the largest steel-concrete arch bridge in Germany.
The next kilometers awaits your cycling through pure nature. Why not pause along the river for a few minutes and see if you can spot one of the beautifully patterned brown trout in there? Before you reach the Moselle valley, you can visit the castle ruins of Ramstein near Kordel. Beautiful buildings, such as the Porta Nigra or Trier Cathedral mark the 'finish' from afar.
Diversion on the route until the end of 2020
At the 'Kuckuckslay' tunnel, the Kyll cycle route will be closed until the end of 2020 due to extensive construction work between Kordel and Trier-Ehrang. A shuttle bus runs between the two stations from April to October.
- For train travellers: There are a total of 22 stations along the Kyll cycle route between Dahlem and Trier, so that the route can be reached comfortably. In particular, the stations in Jünkerath, Gerolstein, Kyllburg, Bitburg-Erdorf, Kordel and Ehrang are ideal for cycling trips in combination with 'Bahn und Bike' because all trains stop here (usually every half hour). >> www.bahn.de
