Along the Maas it is wonderful to travel for miles on the dike. You will find a vast landscape and you will also pass through some beautiful old towns.
Monastery complex Megen
You drive to the Heerlijkheid Appeltern. The country house has disappeared, but there are still several monumental outbuildings in the historic park. You then drive past two old churches before crossing the Maas on a ferry to Megen. This beautiful town enjoys a protected village view, partly because of the eighteenth-century monastery complex. You will also pass the Gevangenpoort, a fourteenth-century gate tower that was once part of the demolished wall.
Batenburg Castle
It is wonderfully peaceful to cycle along the Maasdijk along the vast grasslands and the river. You pass the Stella Polaris, or North Star: a flour mill from 1865. At Ravenstein you cross the Maas again, and on the other side you pass the eighteenth-century mill of Batenburg. In the village you can take a look at the impressive ruins of Batenburg Castle. Just before Theetuin Appeltern you pass a nineteenth-century dike warehouse.
