Description
Just above Hasselt, Belgium, you can take a cycling tour around Zonhoven. You will find plenty of natural beauty here, such as the unique De Wijers pond area and De Teut reserve.
Bokrijk Open Air Museum
The route starts just outside Hasselt. You will soon pass Bokrijk Open Air Museum. Here you can experience how people used to live in more than 100 historic houses. Then you cycle through the extensive De Teut nature reserve. Here you can enjoy the forests and views over the heath for many kilometers. At VVV-Tourisme Houthalen-Helchteren you will find plenty of information about the region. Just in front of the tourist office is the striking St. Martin's Church.
The Wijers
In picturesque Zonhoven you can enjoy a terrace at the cozy Martenshuys. Then you cycle to De Wijers, a mosaic of forest, agricultural land, reed beds and more than 1000 ponds. These ponds (\\\'wijers\\\' in the dialect) originated from quarries where iron ore was extracted in the twelfth century. Later the quarries were flooded to breed fish. From the lookout tower you have a beautiful panorama over this unique, beautiful area!
