The first ponds were built as early as the 13th century by order of the nuns of the abbey of Herckenrode. The current complex of hundreds of contiguous ponds was only created after the Zonhoven fish farmers made their living from it since 1865. In this way it became a nursery and safe haven for many rare animals and plants. Wijer is the local name for a pond on which fish are grown. From the 15 m high watchtower you get a beautiful view of this vast meadow landscape.
