Twiske: in the footsteps of the peat cutters

The Twiske nature reserve is a beautiful and rugged wetland area, where numerous birds can be spotted. What an oasis, so close to Amsterdam! The base for this route is Twiske Haven, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee. Here you have a beautiful view of the Stootersplas, which is located in the middle of the Twiske. This lake was created after sand was extracted here for the construction of the Coentunnel route. Then you take a beautiful walk through the Twiske, a varied nature reserve just above Amsterdam. You will find forests, grasslands, but also a lot of water. Centuries ago, this area consisted of peat meadows along the Twiske river. The residents extracted peat on a small scale. At the beginning of the twentieth century the land was drained, but it turned out to be unsuitable for agriculture.
