Schermer Island
The villages on this route are located on the former Schermereiland. This island was created in the Middle Ages between large lakes such as the Schermeer and the Beemstermeer. The inhabitants of this island used to live from, among other things, the herring fishery and whaling. By draining the Beemster and the Schermer in the 17th century, the Schermereiland became part of the mainland.
