Zonhoven, heart of the Wijers

The western part of Zonhoven is a patchwork of countless ponds and streams. Here you are literally in the heart of De Wijers, the largest contiguous pond area in Flanders where unique bird and plant species live. From the lookout tower in the middle of De Wijers, you get a fantastic view of this nature reserve. A little further on you can take a look behind the scenes of one of the fish farms. They are rightly regarded as the architects of De Wijers. But De Wijers in Zonhoven includes more than just ponds. During the summer months, the nature reserve'de Teut\\\', with its crystal clear fens, seems to have been taken straight out of a Provencal painting because of the flowering heather. Discover here the traces of the first visitors to Zonhoven: prehistoric hunters and farmers.
