Mill route through the Beemster

Enjoy a breath of fresh air in the flat landscape of the Eilandspolder and Beemster World Heritage Site. A beautiful, quintessentially Dutch route with all those windmills along the way! From the path along the Beemsterringvaart canal, you have a beautiful view of the Beemsterpolder, the polder drained by hydraulic engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater. The landscape here is crisscrossed with ditches, waterways, and channels to regulate the water level. Not only the polder, but also the Beemster villages breathe history. Like Middenbeemster, the oldest village in this polder. Thanks to its many historic buildings, Middenbeemster is a protected village view. Along the North Holland Canal, you'll pass two forts from the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Further on, you'll pass through the picturesque villages of De Rijp, Graf, and Grootschermer. On the right lies the centuries-old Eilandspolder.
