Walking along the Lek

Along the Lek you can get a breath of fresh air, while enjoying beautiful views. Halfway along this route you will pass through the picturesque old Schoonhoven, a town known for its silver crafts.

Abroad
You walk over the dike out of the village. On the right you look out over the babbling Lek, on the other side you see the church tower of Groot-Ammers. You make a turn around the Buitenlanden, a rough nature reserve where reed stems were once harvested. Baskets were woven from these stems, including for the former salmon industry in Ammerstol.

Silver City
Schoonhoven is known for its history of silversmithing. In the old city centre you will experience the atmosphere of times gone by thanks to the many monumental buildings. You will pass the Veerpoort from 1601, the only one of the original five city gates that has survived. With a ferry you will sail across the Lek to the Alblasserwaard. Over the car-free dike you will walk to Groot-Ammers, where you will sail back to Ammerstol with a ferry.

Please note: the ferry at Ammerstol only operates on Sundays and during high season.
