Walking along the Lek

Along the Lek you can get a breath of fresh air while enjoying beautiful views. Halfway through this route you will pass through the picturesque old Schoonhoven, a town known for its silver craft.

Abroad
The route starts with a terrace at Eetcafé Het Gebouw in picturesque Ammerstol. From here you walk over the dike out of the village. On the right you look out over the rippling Lek, on the other side you see the church tower of Groot-Ammers. You make a turn around the Buitenlanden, a rugged nature reserve where reeds were once extracted. Baskets were woven from these stems, including for the former salmon industry in Ammerstol.

Silver City
Schoonhoven is known for its silversmithing history. In the old city center you will experience the atmosphere of a bygone era thanks to the many monumental buildings. You will pass, among other things, the Veerpoort from 1601, the only one of the original five city gates that remains. You can take a ferry across the Lek to the Alblasserwaard. You walk along the car-free dike to Groot-Ammers, where you take a ferry back to Ammerstol.

NB; the ferry at Ammerstol only runs on Sundays and in high season.
