At Millingen aan de Rijn, the Rhine breaks through the lateral moraines of Montferland and the Rijk van Nijmegen. This water-rich region is known as the Gelderse Poort. Both the wooded and hilly area east of Nijmegen and the Ooijpolder are an attraction for walkers and cyclists. The route first leads through the flat polder land and then climbs the lateral moraine at Nijmegen and ends at the edge of the ancient Reichswald.
