Gelderland 5 | Overijssel enclaves: Veessen – Deventer

After Veessen the route makes a bend around the village of Welsum. Just like with Marle, the border between Gelderland and Overijssel does not follow the IJssel here, but is located a little further to the west. Due to a change in the course of the river, Welsum has become an Overijssel enclave, surrounded by Gelderland territory. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, residents of Welsum and Marle requested to be added to Gelderland, but opinions were so divided in the House of Representatives that it did not happen.
