Walking through the Valtherbos

Would you like to taste the Drenthe silence for a day? Then take a walk through the Valtherbos. A nature reserve with a rich history.

Hiding den
You start the route at Tuinterras Restaurant De Gaffel. From here you can walk straight into the Valtherbos. Pretty soon you will pass the former hiding place, a place marked with a large boulder. From 1943 until the liberation, sixteen Jewish people in hiding stayed here. Resistance fighter Albertus Zefat was betrayed in 1944, but refused to name the location of the hiding place. He was therefore summarily executed by the Germans.

Brink
You mainly walk between coniferous trees. The deeper you walk into the forest, the quieter it becomes. There are some burial mounds in the forest. On the Meerbosweg you walk through a small forest: the Meerbosch. You can still see old oaks and beech trees here. In the countryside you can walk between the ash trees that are used for agriculture. In Valthe you walk along the village green. Here you can still taste the atmosphere of times gone by. Time for a terrace at De Gaffel!
