Description
The Waterland region has everything to make your cyclist's heart beat faster. You will find peace, space and a unique cultural history, such as in Monnickendam and Volendam.
Edam
The route starts at Café De Drie Zwanen. First grab a cozy terrace here before you cycle through the Ilperveld, an extensive brackish peat meadow area with countless ditches and reed collars. On the edge of Purmerend you drive past the Purmerbos, an exception in this vast polder country. In the Purmerpolder you pass Boerderij Leeuwendaal, a former pleasure garden of an Amsterdam merchant where you can now stay. You cycle through Edam and Volendam: two characteristic towns with plenty of sights to see.
Monnickendam
On the dike is the Kathammer Mill, a polder mill from 1650. Further on you pass through Monnickendam, another beautiful old town where you can admire many monumental buildings. What a special historic atmosphere! Can't get enough of this? That's a good thing, because time also seems to have stood still a bit in Zuiderwoud and Broek in Waterland. How beautiful the Waterland is!
