Description
Forts and castles
The starting point of this route is at a parking lot on the edge of the North Holland Dune Reserve. From here you walk to Heemskerk and further to Beverwijk. You pass through the Assumburg castle garden. This castle garden is located behind the castle and was laid out 300 years ago in a French Classicist style. A little further on you can take a look at the Fort at Veldhuis, one of the older concrete forts of the Defense Line of Amsterdam.
Further on the road
From Beverwijk you continue to Velsen and then walk along the edge of IJmuiden back to the starting point of the route. You can also expand your route slightly by walking over the locks at IJmuiden. Here you will find the SHIP information point with information about the construction of a new sea lock. You then continue walking past the Engelmundus Church in Velsen-Zuid, the ruins of Brederode in Santpoort-Zuid and the Duin & Kruidberg Estate in Santpoort-Noort.
Winter or summer route?
This route is the winter route over the IJmondpad. The water taxi does not operate from October 1 to April 1, which is why you cannot follow part of the summer route in winter. You do make a crossing with the ferry in Velsen. This ferry sails every 20 minutes every day. Would you rather try the summer route? Then follow this 77 kilometer route .
