Description
This route takes you through the Mastenbos. In this forest you can visit several bunkers with a guide and discover the trenches via the Loopgravenpad.
Mast Forest
The Mastenbos is a 178 hectare nature reserve in Kapellen. The forest is home to various plant and animal species. You might be able to spot them during the walk. Extra attention is paid to heathland management, which makes the rare nightjar very happy!
Trench path
In the Mastenbos you can discover 5 km of trenches. Along this path lie the exceptionally preserved trenches and 21 bunkers. Four of these bunkers can also be visited from the inside: a command bunker, a machine gun bunker, a cannon bunker and a troop bunker. The Loopgravenpad starts at the Kalmthoutsesteenweg and is accessible all year round.
Fort Ertbrand
The Fort of Ertbrand was built in 1908. In 1914 the fort was at full strength, around 500 men. A beautiful location to go and admire.
