Description
This route takes you through the Mastenbos. In this forest you can visit some bunkers with a guide and discover the trenches via the Trench Trail.
Mastenbos
The Mastenbos is a 178-hectare nature reserve in Kapellen. The forest provides various plant and animal species. Maybe you can discover them during the walk. Extra attention is given to heath management and the rare nightjar is very happy with that!
Trench Path
In the Mastenbos you can discover 5 km of trenches. Along this path are the exceptionally preserved trenches and 21 bunkers. You can also visit four of those bunkers from the inside: a command bunker, a machine gun bunker, a gun bunker and a troop bunker. The Trench Trail starts at Kalmthoutsesteenweg and is accessible all year round.
Fort of Ertbrand
The Fort of Ertbrand was built in 1908. In 1914 the fort was at full strength, around 500 men. A beautiful location to admire.
