Description
This route takes you through the Mastenbos. In this forest you can visit some bunkers with a guide and discover the trenches via the Trench Path.
Mastenbos
The Mastenbos is a 178 hectare nature reserve in Kapellen. The forest is home to various plant and animal species. Maybe you can discover them during the walk. Extra attention is paid to heathland management and the rare nightjar is very happy with that!
Trench path
In the Mastenbos you can discover 5 km of trenches. Along this path are the exceptionally preserved trenches and 21 bunkers. You can also visit the inside of four of those bunkers: a command bunker, a machine gun bunker, a cannon bunker and a troop bunker. The Trench Path starts at the Kalmthoutsesteenweg and is accessible all year round.
Fort of Ertbrand
The Fort of Ertbrand was built in 1908. In 1914 the fort was at full strength, around 500 troops. A beautiful location to admire.
