Description

The Utrecht polder is a very special area. You will discover rivers that helped drain this once swampy raised bog. But there is also low peat to be found - even now. Soon after your starting point you can have a coffee at Eet-en Drinkcafé De Gkeerde Kanis. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen, a little further away, is one of the last extensive low peat areas that the Netherlands once had. You will see swamps, but also hay fields, flowery meadows and reed fields. The Kromme Mijdrecht is one of the drainage rivers in the former raised bog area. Land was reclaimed here centuries ago. The lock in Woerdense Verlaat originally dates from 1448! Take a trip to the Westveense Molen, a polder mill from 1676, a little further away. Also a very nice age!
