Tour of the peat lakes Woerdense Verlaat

The Utrechtse polder is a very special area. You will discover rivers that helped drain this once so marshy raised bog. But there is also low peat to be found - even now. Soon after your starting point you can have a coffee at Eet-en Drinkcafé De Gekeerde Kanis. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen, a little further on, is one of the last extensive low peat areas that the Netherlands once had. You will see marshes, but also hayfields, flowery meadows and reed fields. The Kromme Mijdrecht is one of the drainage rivers in former raised bog area. Land was reclaimed here centuries ago. The lock in Woerdense Verlaat originally dates from 1448! Take a trip to the Westveense Molen, a polder mill from 1676, a little further on. Also a very nice age!
