West of the Belgian Beerse you will find the nature reserve Eksterheide. In this domain of about 170 hectares you will find old clay pits that have been transformed into small lakes over the years. This water attracts all kinds of water birds. This route is therefore recommended for hikers who like to spot birds.
From airport to nature reserve
The first part of this route runs along a heathland and then you walk into the woods. You might not think so now, but there used to be an airport here. If you look closely you can still see the open terrain where the runway of the former airport was. This is the only reminder that can still be found here in the landscape. Other traces from the past are the clay pits that were used by brickworks. The remains of this are now called the Duivelskuil. You walk over the Eksterheide to the village of Sint-Jozef-Rijkevorsel and then you set course for the starting point of your walk.
Observation huts on the heath
Spread throughout the Eksterheide you will find several observation huts. Stay here for a while and spot birds such as hawks, woodlarks and butterflies. Furthermore, you can also see deer and other mammals in this area if you are lucky.
Belgian towns
A stone's throw from this nature reserve you will find several typical Belgian towns that you can visit. In and around these originally catholic towns you will find several churches, chapels and monasteries that you can admire. Furthermore, it is always nice to end your walk with a cup of coffee or a drink. In this area you can also follow route 643422.
