Description
A beautiful area with nice villages is one thing, but it only really comes to life when you get to know the stories behind it. Such as in Bosschenhoofd and Zegge, two villages in West Brabant.
Mary Chapel
This route starts in Zegge. The name comes from a low-lying meadow that was often flooded, where there is a lot of sedge: a type of reed grass. The Holy Mary Message Church from 1912 is a beautiful picture with the associated presbytery. On the other side you see a chapel, which was built ten years later. A Lady Chapel is said to have been built on this site after the St. Elisabeth's Flood of 1421, as an expression of gratitude by a skipper who had survived.
Stop Seppe
Rural paths and roads lead you between the meadows to Bosschenhoofd. Here you can enjoy a beer on the terrace of Café Eeterij Stroop. Prefer a bite to eat? That is also possible in this old inn. Bosschenhoofd is popularly called Seppe, after the old inn of Jacobus Sep, born in 1815. Rail workers spent the night here at that time, which is why the railway company called the staging point Stopplaats Seppe. And that stuck!
