Walking through the Niersdal from Heldro IJssalon

This walking route takes you through the Niersdal, a beautiful nature reserve just above Gennep. From a lookout tower at a historic location you have beautiful views, including over the Maas.

Niersdal
From Ottersum you can walk straight into the Niersdal. The river De Niers meanders here through a lovely landscape of grasslands, wet bushes, small watercourses and swamp forests with willows and poplars. You will find a varied flora and fauna here. And a wonderfully refreshing silence. Ideal to recharge the battery. On the outskirts of Gennep you will see the St. Martin's Tower from 1869. The church itself was destroyed at the end of WWII.

Genneperhuis
The Genneperhuis once stood near the place where the Niers flows into the Maas. The history of this fortress goes all the way back to a Roman fortification. After many battles, the fortress was destroyed by the French in 1710. There is now a watchtower on the foundations. Enjoy the views here at your leisure. You walk back to Ottersum through the quiet rural area. Time for a delicious artisan ice cream at Heldro IJssalon.
