Description

This route takes you around the Volkerak, a body of water that was probably created during the St. Elisabeth Flood in 1421. From the dike you can enjoy different views of the water.

Goeree-Overflakkee
You cycle across the rural island of Goeree-Overflakkee to the village of Achthuizen, originally a temporary shelter for seasonal workers from North Brabant. Many of them continued to live here and formed a Catholic enclave in a predominantly Protestant area. Seen from the air, the village is strikingly shaped like a figure eight.

Dintel Buntings
You will come across the Volkerak again and again. But the influence of the sea can be seen in the creeks that you encounter in this region. This way you cross the Steenbergse Vliet, where you have a beautiful view of the bird-rich Dintelse Gorzen nature reserve, which became dry after the closure of the Philipsdam. Just before Oude-Tonge you pass the Grevelingenmeer, a former estuary. Today this is the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe.
