Walking from Wellerlooi: the Maasduinen

Along the Limburg Maas you will still find centuries-old drifting dunes. Discover the two different faces of Wellerlooi with this walk between dune and river.

The Maasduinen
This walking route through the beautiful surroundings of Wellerlooi starts at Eetcafé Het Centrum. After a cup of coffee you walk through Wellerlooi, a characteristic nineteenth-century mining village. A little later you can walk straight into the Maasduinen, an area that emerged at the end of the last ice age. Sand deposited by the Rhine and Meuse was blown up into drifting dunes by the westerly wind during dry periods.

Wellsche Heide
The dunes are almost all covered with forest, such as the Wellsche Heide that you walk past. Oaks and birches stretch out, and a little lower down the mountain ash adorns your route. You walk back west of Wellerlooi, with a view over the rippling Maaswater. The ships on the water, the panoramic view: walking along such a mighty river is never boring. You may just see the bicycle-pedestrian ferry to Blitterswijck docking - good for another walking day!
