Walking from Wellerlooi: the Maasduinen

Along the Limburg Maas you will find centuries-old drifting dunes. Discover the two different faces of Wellerlooi with this walk between dune and river.

The Maasduinen
This walking route through the beautiful surroundings of Wellerlooi starts at Eetcafé Het Centrum. After a cup of coffee you walk through Wellerlooi, a characteristic nineteenth-century reclamation village. A little later you walk into the Maasduinen, an area that originated at the end of the last ice age. Sand, deposited by the Rhine and Maas, was blown up into drifting dunes by the westerly wind during dry periods.

Wellsche Heide
The dunes are almost all covered with forest, such as the Wellsche Heide that you walk past. Oaks and birches stretch out, a little lower the rowan tree adorns your route. You walk back west of Wellerlooi, with a view over the rippling Maas water. The ships on the water, the wide view: walking along such a mighty river never gets boring. You might just see the bicycle-pedestrian ferry to Blitterswijck mooring - good for another day of walking!
