A day of walking through the Jekerkwartier and the Jekerdal feels like a trip abroad. How beautiful and characteristic it is here. You will also pass the viewing platform at the ENCI quarry.

Picturesque Jekerkwartier
The route starts at Eetcafé Bijzonder, a cozy eatery right at the foot of the Pietersberg. Before you leave, you can have a drink and eat here. Then you walk through the City Park into the Jekerkwartier. Because of the many old buildings and the remains of the city wall, you can soak up a wonderfully characteristic historic atmosphere here. Like the beautiful Helpoort. You will also pass the Bisschopsmolen, an originally medieval watermill.

Maastricht wines
Via the City Park you walk back to Eetcafé Bijzonder. Time for a pit stop. Then you walk through the former village of Sint Pieter, you will see the old village church here. Huis de Torentjes is a partly sixteenth-century country house that is inhabited by a well-known violinist. Further on you will pass a viewing platform completed in 2015 which gives you a spectacular view over the ENCI quarry. Then you walk into the idyllic Jekerdal with its vineyards. It's like France here...

You will find the Bisschopsmolen in the heart of Maastricht. This mid-stroke water mill dates from the 7th century, but the mill did not receive its current name until the 11th century. The name of the mill refers to the bishop of Liège who became the owner of this mill in the 11th century. From 1442, the mill was used for 350 years to grind malt for the Maastricht Brewers' Guild. After that, the mill was sold several times, including to Maastricht merchants. In 1920 the mill came into the hands of the Municipality of Maastricht, after which the mill was fitted with a new iron water board. The mill was completely restored in 2004 and since 2005 the mill has been used again. Just like in the past, the mill is powered by the water of the Jeker, only now spelled is ground to brew beer and bake bread.
