Description
Over the centuries, the Maas has shaped a versatile and fascinating landscape in Limburg. On this route you will be introduced to a maze of old channels, cut-off meanders, dikes and floodplains with beautiful flora and fauna. You will also find historic towns and picturesque Maas villages here. Quickly get on your bike and discover the cross-border nature reserve Rivierpark Maasvallei.
History along the Meuse
The starting point of this route is in Grevenbicht. From here you cross the Maas to the Belgian Boyen and then cycle further along the Maas to Maasmechelen. Just outside Maasmechelen you cross the Maas again into the Netherlands. On the banks of the Juliana Canal near Stein you can take a look at the remains of an old castle at Stein Castle Ruins. A little further on you cycle past the Regional Museum Schippersbeurs. Here you can view all kinds of excavations such as earthenware pots and flint tools from prehistoric times, but also remains from Roman times. Back to Grevenbicht
A little further on you cycle past Elsloo Castle. From here you set course again to Grevenbicht where you started your cycling tour. You cycle through Stein, Urmond and Obbicht.
Elsloo Castle
You will find Elsloo Castle on the edge of the village of Elsloo. This castle originated from a former brewery with a water mill and a farm. All these buildings, except for the brewery, are now part of the castle. The castle has passed from owner to owner over the centuries, but since 1957 it has been in the hands of the municipality of Elsloo.
