This route takes you from Bussum through the extensive polders around Weesp. You will also get to know the historic towns of Weesp and Naarden.
Fort near Nigtevecht
The route starts at the parking lot in the heart of Bussum. You drive through the polder and along the Vecht to the first attraction of your route: Fort at Nigtevecht. A little further on you will see some characteristic monumental farms on the Gein river. You will also pass the Broekzijder Mill from 1641. What beautiful surroundings!

Beautiful fortified towns
It is worth switching back in Weesp. With no fewer than 200 national monuments, it is not surprising that Weesp enjoys a protected cityscape. A little further on you will pass another historic place: Naarden, one of the best preserved fortified towns in Europe. You can easily experience the historic atmosphere in this cozy town. You will find gems such as St. Vitus Church, the Town Hall and the Libra Museum.

The Fort at the Nigtevecht is a national monument from 1904. During the Second World War, the fort served as a storage place for goods stolen by the Germans. Due to its location on the canal, they could transport the items to Germany via inland vessels. The fort is nicknamed the Knakenfort, because it was used for several decades to store coins. An old bridge in the canal has been replaced by a dam that could support the weight of the heavy trucks carrying money.
