Fort Nigtevecht is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam that is Unesco World Heritage. A serene place surrounded by greenery. The fort is a very suitable location to start your cycling and walking tour. Fort Nigtevecht has been in use from 1904, during the mobilization 1915 - 1917 about 300 soldiers slept there. Walk through the fort and discover its history, in all rooms there is information about the past and now. Start your tour at the main entrance and then enjoy coffee or tea with cake or cake. Then hit the road and cycle across the canal along the river Vecht to Fort Nieuwersluis. You will find plenty of cultural history, beautiful landscapes and a striking amount of peace along the way. Fort bij Nigtevecht is owned by Natuurmonumenten and has also functioned as a memorial site since 2016. Relatives have various options here to give the urn with the ashes of a deceased loved one a nice place in a green, quiet environment. There are also often beautiful exhibitions. The fort is open every Sunday and from April to October also on Saturdays. Sometimes you see the kingfisher here and bats live in the right half.
