Hengelo, the Achterhoek, IJsselvallei and Doesburg

This route leads you through some of the most beautiful and authentic areas of the Netherlands: the Achterhoek and the IJsselvallei. On your bike you can clearly see how the landscape slowly changes. Along the way you will also discover beautiful historic Doesburg!

Oosterwijk Flood
From Hengelo you set course towards the IJssel, along the Oosterwijkse Vloed. This river flows into the IJssel via the Baakse Beek, with a considerable difference in height: no fewer than 18 weirs have been placed in the Oosterwijkse Vloed. In the village of Baak you will see the castle and estate of the same name with its centuries-old trees. A little later the landscape looks completely different again, when you cycle past the nineteenth-century Bronkhorster mill through the wide IJssel valley.

Historic Doesburg
The road turns into a separate cycle path with a beautiful view of the water. At first this is the IJssel, but a little further you cycle along an old meander of this mighty river: the Zwarte Schaar. Further on, be sure to stop in the beautifully preserved historic city center of Doesburg. Back at your starting point, Restaurant Eetcafé Jansen & Jansen in Hengelo, you can sit down for a tasty snack.
